Nature: Slightly cold; bitter and sour; attributive to liver.

 

Characteristics: Roots of a perennial herb with large white or pink flowers. The medicinal roots are hard heavy long pieces, reddish brown with pinkish white interior. It should not be used alone during pregnancy or the first two months after childbirth. It can be used as part of compound formulas.

 

Therapeutic effects: Nourish blood and astringent to yin; calm liver yang manifested as dizziness, headache, insomnia; soothe liver energy and alleviate abdominal and chest pain.
